26 May 2019: Muscat, Oman: Sumitomo Tyres recently bagged the top spot for innovation and excellence at the Tyre Technology International Awards, 2019 for its all-new groundbreaking sensing core development technology.
The Tyre Technology of the Year was awarded to Sumitomo Rubber Industries Ltd. (SRI) for its sensing core development technology. The new cutting-edge tyre-sensing technology will be able to detect road conditions, tyre load and other information without the use of direct sensors.
The pioneering technology has been designed to analyse wheel-speed signals generated by the rotation of the tyres which in turn notifies the driver of changes in tyre air pressure. Unlike camera or radar sensors, Sensing Core can calculate and detect friction, which is useful when faced with hazards like black ice and hydroplaning risk. The Sensing Core technology is the next evolution in DWS (Deflation Warning System) technology, which is another SRI proprietary technology with the same working principle. This latest and advanced version will reduce the cost of installation and eliminate the need for maintenance.
Judge Gert Heinrich, Senior Professor at the Institute of Textile Machinery and Textile High Performance Materials Technology, Leibniz Institute for Polymer Research, said, “Sensing Core is a technology that not only contributes to greater safety for drivers and passengers, but will also play a role in the rapid advancement of autonomous vehicle technology in the near future.”
