26 February 2020: Muscat, Oman: Japanese tyre maker Sumitomo Rubber Industries (SRI) in joint partnership with Ibaraki University in Japan has established a new observation technology for tyre-rubber material analysis.
With the help of a new particle beam microscope developed by Ibaraki University, through joint research with SRI, a revolutionary technique has emerged which will make it possible to evaluate the actual rubber that is used in mass-produced tyres. This cutting edge technique in tyre-rubber analysis will create enormous potential for future applications in materials development. Using the new technique Sumitomo has succeeded in observing both ‘coarse and fine’ cross-linked areas of rubber in vivid detail for the first time.
While conventional observation methods provide image data that shows an inseparable mixture of sulphur and other reinforcing agents, the new method generates clear images that highlight specific compound components, such as silica cross-links or other reinforcing agents in specific colours. The structures formed by sulphur cross-links, which give rubber its elasticity, have been known to be closely related to rubber strength and its change in properties over time. Till date though, the details of these structures within rubber have remained a mystery.
With the discovery of this new method, the industry will be able to evaluate the detailed structures of tyres. This image data in turn can be used to develop internal structures for future tyres that will provide superior performance in terms of fuel efficiency and resistance to wear and tear.
A spokesperson at SRI said, “The process creates enormous potential for future applications in materials development. By allowing us to evaluate the very structures of tyres themselves, this image data can be used to come up with future prototypes that will provide superior performance.”
