DURING HOT SUMMER, MAINTAIN PROPER TYRE PRESSURE WITH SUMITOMO TYRES

18 June 2019: Muscat, Oman: It is always important to check Tyre Pressure or the amount of air inside a tyre which is subject to change based on temperature and weather. Due to its importance, vehicles made since 2008 come equipped with Tyre Pressure Monitoring Systems (TPMS). It illuminates a horseshoe-shaped icon when the pressure in the tyres falls significantly below a preset optimum value.

Air pressure readings on the dashboard display give accurate pressure readings. If a low-pressure light comes on the dashboard, be sure to manually check the air pressure at least once a month. Low-pressure lights won’t come on until the air pressure is really low.

Tyres are often the most neglected part of a vehicle. Visit a filling station to check and adjust tyre pressure in five easy steps. The ideal time for this is during the night or early in the morning, before going to work, or when the temperature of the tyres equals the outside air temperature. During the hot summer days, when driving, the temperature of tyres increases faster, consequently, the heated air inside the tyres expands and its pressure rises quickly. Hence never reduce the pressure of warm tyres. Once they cool down, their pressure could fall below the specified minimum tyre pressure.

When at the filling station, firstly, determine the operating air pressure by reviewing the owner’s manual or checking the sticker on the inside of the driver’s side door. Hot pressure can be up to 20% higher than cold and under no circumstances should hot tyres be pressurised to the recommended cold tyre pressure given by the car manufacturers.

Secondly, remove the cap from the tyre air valve and place it somewhere safe. Thirdly, firmly press the rounded end of a tyre pressure gauge until you hear air being released. That meter displays the air pressure in the tyre.

Fourthly, to add air, use the air compressor hose to fill the tyre. To release air, use the point on the back of the air pressure gauge to depress the valve pin. Repeat step three to make sure you have not over or under-inflated the tyre. Lastly, replace the cap on the air valve and continue driving!
